When you have to travel and there is a heavy traffic congestion, the best mode of transport is the motorcycle. No wonder motorcycle is getting more popular these days. In response to increasing fuel prices, motorcycles are improving their fuel efficiency. Frequent travel is common in city life. One has to commute between home and office, and do shopping etc. The scooter industry has been active by designing and launching newer models. There are toll charges to be paid for using the highways which are hiked all too often. Motorcycles no doubt are more eco-friendly with less green house emission, but are more polluting when it comes to other pollutants as compared to cars. With increased motorcycles on the road, pollution too is on the increase. As an answer to this criticism, the scooter industry has come out with kick scooter.

Scooters, mopeds, cruisers and sport bikes come under the category of street bikes. Motorcycles designed explicitly for racing are off-road motorcycles. There are some which can be used for racing as well as for transportation. These are called dual purpose motorcycles. Scooters too have been going through a period of innovations. Scooters are of different types. There are the gas scooters, electric scooters, mobility scooters, motorized scooters and kick scooters.

Amongst the various types of scooters, the gas scooters are what are commonly used. The gas scooters have a long past. They became initially popular in Italy and Japan where they were earlier introduced. Later their popularity spread to other regions as Europe, United States and Asia. They have an engine power ranging from 50cc to 250cc. The gas scooters can be used for traveling long distance. The better mileage that they give is primarily due to their lower body weight. There are a number of brands and models of gas scooters that you can choose from in the market. The electric scooters are significantly different from gas scooters in three major ways. Instead of petroleum products as the source of energy, they depend on electric batteries. This is non-polluting. The next major difference is that they are only capable of traveling at lower speeds and that too for shorter distances. The batteries need to be recharged after running a short distance. The mobility scooters are designed with the disabled or handicapped and the elderly in mind. Otherwise they are like the gas scooters and the electric scooters. But their speed range is lower at 5mph to 20mph. The scooters with smaller engines that are 50cc and lesser are called as seated scooters, segways or standup gas or electric scooters, and mopeds. This category of scooters have a lower speed range from 8 to 20mph and are to be recharged or refueled frequently after covering short distances. But this category of scooters is extremely popular amongst youth, especially the teenagers. Their better fuel efficiency makes them more attractive.
